The Process of Writing an Essay

You have to make sure that you will pick the topic that you would like to write before you start writing your paper. There is a chance that you are already thinking about the things that you would like to write. You also have to find out how you would like to write on the paper or what your main goal is.

Sometimes, it is easy to start writing because your teacher or your professor has already given you the topic that you would like to write about but if you are not assigned any topic, this can be a bit harder for you. This is when you should truly exert effort into finding the right topic. The moment that you decide on your topic, you have to start researching about it.

Before you start writing on your paper, it might be better for you if you could start with an outline. This is where you will write the things that you would like to state on your introduction. You might also want to place the opening line that will help your topic become noticed by your reader. Outline the different paragraphs that will be part of the body of the essay. You would have to separate the things that you have to state in different paragraphs. Write in the outline the main details that you are going to talk about per paragraph. Lastly, you also have to place the conclusion wherein you will summarize all of the things that you have discussed in your essay.

You have to know that you have to follow the appropriate guide that has been set by your professor regarding the essay that you have to write. You have to remember that the basic paper that you may write will contain the following:

You have to remember that the introduction contains an opening statement that will catch the attention of your reader. You also have to present your view about the topic immediately. You may be wondering how are your opening statements catching? You may want to start by asking questions that will leave your reader asking him or herself to get an answer. You may also want to use quotations that people may be or may not be familiar with. Do remember that in order to make the introduction more formal, you may want to veer away from using passive voice when you construct your sentences.

With the use of your outline as your guide, you will know immediately what you have to talk about for each paragraph that will be part of your essay’s body. You have to make sure that each paragraph will contain supporting details about the statements that you will make. You may also write some examples for some paragraphs that you will place on paper so that your readers will understand the things that you are presenting better.

One effective way to write the body of the paragraph is to first start with the example that you are going to place on one paragraph and then write a transitioning sentence on the end of the paragraph and write the different details on the next paragraph that will describe the example that you have presented better.

Through the body of the paragraph, you have to make sure that you will be able to paint an image of the example that you have stated. The reader should be able to understand what you are trying to say immediately. Do not make your paragraphs too long. You may want to write about 3 – 5 sentences per paragraph.

It does not mean that just because your conclusion is the last part of your essay it already means that you should not give a lot of effort into writing this. It is highly important that you write this part of your essay appropriately. You have to summarize all of the things that you have stated so that your reader will get to know the main points of your essay. Remember that a conclusion should not be too long. An appropriate length would be about 4 – 5 sentences including your ending statement.

You have to remember that if you are not naturally good at writing essays it already means that you will forever be hopeless. When you practice writing more, you will realize that writing will come to you naturally and you will find writing easier to do.
